Albert Roelofs, son of the landscape painter Willem Roelofs, was an artist's child, who grew up among his father's brushes and paint. In order not to be constantly compared with his father, he abandoned the landscape early in his painting career and opted for figure and portrait paintings. A source of inspiration was his wife Tjieke, whom he married in 1900 in The Hague. He may have portrayed her here, in a performance that is somewhere between landscape and portrait. It is a smoothly-impressionistic work, as if it were a sketch. Roelofs skillfully paints the nuances of light and shadow and makes dark trunks stand out against the sun glare of a pond. His use of color is light, in contrast to the subdued tones from his father.
