What seems strange at first glance can be inspiring if you look at it with different eyes. This certainly applies to this 'cut off' landscape. Only the lower half of the mill that Albert Roelofs Jr. painted is visible. Why would the artist have done this? Place yourself on the spot where the painter stood. You look at a farmer's wife with the plate in her hand in front of the mill. Is she about to throw away some leftover food or will it go to the chickens scurrying around the yard? By painting what was in his 'focus', Roelofs approached the traditionally painted landscape in a different way. In this way, in close-up, Roelofs draws all the attention to what is happening close to the mil
