Albertus Verhoesen was a pupil of Jan van Ravenswaay and of the livestock painter P.G. van Os. He lived and worked in Utrecht and Amersfoort and from 1824 to 1826 he was part of the painting colony in Hilversum. His specialization consisted of landscapes with cattle and animal stables, but above all he became familiar with his poultry scenes. During his 'Hilversum years', Verhoesen probably got lessons from B.C. Koekkoek, who also lived there. In Amersfoort, Verhoesen worked for almost twenty years as city master. In addition, he was also an art dealer.
