Schelfhout often worked along the Scheveningen coast and was one of the first painters in the 19th century to focus on Dutch beach scenes. Here, he introduces a novelty: elegant strollers mingling with fishmongers on the beach. Around that time, recreational outdoor recreation was slowly emerging. Schelfhout loved these kinds of contrasts. He painted the beach scene in small anecdotes, executed with great technical refinement.
