Andries van den Bergh

A winter scene with skaters near a windmill
oil on panel 30.4 x 38.6 cm, signed l.l. and dated 1855

This painting was previously for sale.

Andries van den Bergh was enrolled as a student at the Haagsche Teeken-Academie in 1842 and 1843, when possibly Andreas Schelfhout taught there. After his training, Van den Bergh earned his living as a stage decorator and also painted very creditable summer landscapes and ice scenes upholstered with skaters for the free market. In addition to composition and colouring, he followed the rules that made a 'winter' attractive at the time: a frozen canal with skaters and a 'koek-en-zopie, a tree in winter dress, a Dutch windmill and an impressive cloudy sky. His work was exhibited from 1849 at the Exhibitions of Living Masters in The Hague and Amsterdam.
