The Frisian painter Anneke van der Feer lived and worked in Amsterdam from 1925, where she took lessons from Harmen Meurs. His lyrical-realistic style from the mid-twenties had a major influence on her work. Even after a study at the Free Academy in Paris (1935-1939), a powerful simplicity of line and plane continued to predominate in her figures, portraits and cityscapes. Her work is therefore considered part of the new realism, which also includes Gerard Röling, Charley Toorop, Dick Ket and Raoul Hynckes. She was also part of the experimental studio of filmmaker Joris Ivens for some time, together with John Fernhout and photo-journalists Eli Lotar and Germaine Krull.
