Antonio Nicolo Gasparo 'Anthony' Jacobsen was born in Denmark but left for New York at a young age to try his luck there. He made a name for himself as a painter of ship portraits and he also painted safes for shipping companies. As an advertisement for his work, he wrote his address on the back of his canvases, so that fellow shipowners also had their ships painted by him.
