Arend Hijner made a name for himself with interiors and genre scenes and worked in Hilversum, Deventer and The Hague. His depictions of Zeeland peasant women and folk festivals were best known, which he painted between 1895 and 1900 in Wemeldinge near Goes, where he owned a second home. These impressionistic 'plein air' sketches and paintings exude joie de vivre due to their immediacy and colorful palette. As a student of the Antwerp Academy, the artist had learned early on to bring brighter colors into his work than his Dutch contemporaries.
