Provenance: part. coll. Rijnland-Pfalz, Duitsland.

August Lüdecke-Cleve was born in the German-Dutch border region of Niederrhein. After training at the academies in Düsseldorf and Munich, he settled in the latter city in 1901. He added 'Cleve' to his last name to avoid confusion with a fellow painter. The artist painted impressionist landscapes: meadows with black-and-white cattle, peasants plowing with horses, situated in his native region. However, Lüdecke-Cleve was best known for his paintings of Dutch bulb fields. In 1906, 1924 and 1926, and most likely also in the intervening years, he visited the Netherlands, where he was captivated by this colourful theme.
