August van Voorden, a student of the Rotterdam Academy, was called the 'Rotterdam Breitner' because of his subjects and powerful touch. Popular themes were Rotterdam street life, the ships in the harbour and the large pile-driving works that could be seen everywhere in the rapidly expanding city. He also painted landscapes, including near Kortenhoef. In his cityscapes, touches of bright colour form a refined counterbalance to the Dutch gray atmosphere.
