Barend Brouwer painted cityscapes and the Dutch landscape with its fields, lush meadows, lakes and forests. A true impressionist, he chose the mood and atmosphere, by day or evening, in summer or winter. At a young age, Brouwer was a student of Theophile de Bock in Diepenveen. He then attended the academies of Antwerp and The Hague. From 1923 he lived in Voorburg. Sometimes his forest views resemble the work of De Bock so much that dozens of his paintings were stripped of the B. Brouwer signature and forged with the name Th. the Bock.
