A pupil of The Hague decoration painter J.H.A.A. Breckenheijmer, Van Hove later attended the town’s Academy of Drawing. In his time he was a leading painter of romantic townscapes in which fantasy played a dominant role. He also worked as a stage and set painter and in 1829 became the decorator of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Schouwburg (former court theatre) in The Hague. Van Hove played a major role in 19th century painting through his many pupils, among whom were J. Bosboom, S. Verveer and H.J. Weissenbruch.
