A pupil of The Hague decoration painter J.H.A.A. Breckenheijmer, Van Hove later attended the town’s Academy of Drawing. In his time he was a leading painter of romantic townscapes in which fantasy played a dominant role. He also worked as a stage and set painter and in 1829 became the decorator of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Schouwburg (former court theatre) in The Hague. Van Hove played a major role in 19th century painting through his many pupils, among whom were J. Bosboom, S. Verveer and H.J. Weissenbruch. In this cityscape of The Hague, the guardhouse or 'Wachtje' is visible on the right, which was built by Zeger Reyers in 1827/1828 on the orders of King William I. The small building, which was used to collect excise duties, was located by the Bosbrug along the road between the Korte Voorhout and the Malieveld. The building was damaged during the Second World War and was demolished after 1947. Behind the small house on the left is the official residence of the Admiral of the Dutch Navy.
