Bernard de Hoog is best known as a painter of moody Dutch peasant interiors, a genre that became very popular in our country after 1880. He lived and worked in Amsterdam until he moved to Laren in 1899, where he was introduced to the work of painters such as Albert Neuhuys, Hendrik Kever and Evert Pieters. In his interiors, De Hoog generally emphasizes the figures, mostly mothers and children, who, in quietly continuing their daily activities, are the epitome of serene, domestic happiness. After 1924, when he lived in The Hague, De Hoog also painted fisherman's life and every now and then a landscape with cattle. Much of his work was bought by collectors in America, Canada and England.
