Bernard de Hoog, best known as a painter of quintessential Dutch peasant interiors featuring mothers and children, places a young knitter in the spotlight here. She stands near a window, and the light falls on her hands, which are holding a piece of knitting. Given her age, it is likely one of her first knitted items. What will it be, a sock, a scarf? There is a good chance that De Hoog made it while he lived for a time in the famous painters' village of Laren between 1899 and 1902. There, just like his colleague Albert Neuhuys, who was 20 years older, he was struck by the simple rural life in the Gooi region. Usually, it is mothers and children quietly going about their daily activities who are the epitome of serene, domestic happiness. De Hoog attracted much attention with this theme not only within Europe, but his paintings were also purchased by collectors overseas.
