The work of the Leiden painter Chris van der Windt bears a strong affinity to the Hague School. He often worked 'en plein air' and regarded watercolour as the most suitable medium for depicting the quintessential atmosphere of the Dutch landscape. His favourite subject matter were intimate ‘snapshots’ of a farmstead – a small corner with a single figure, drying laundry, or a cap catching the light, as an eye catcher. He also painted still lifes in exquisite colours. Much of his work was sold in England and Canada.
