Christiaan Addicks was born in Rotterdam in 1871 where he took lessons at the academy where he would later become a teacher himself. He painted impressionist landscapes and genre scenes, but he is especially outstanding in his carefully elaborated still lifes. This versatile artist also drew book illustrations and made designs for book covers. Addicks was a member of Arti & Amicitiae and De Onafhankelijken in Amsterdam.
