Coenraad Alexander Weerts came from a wealthy family. His father was mayor of Deventer and his brother mayor of Arnhem. He himself was a lawyer and art collector and painting was primarily a hobby and relaxation for him. During his youth, Weerts was taught by the portrait painter Jan Antonie Kaldenbach in Delftshaven and by the still life painter Willem van Leen in Zutphen. Eventually he specialized in romantic landscapes and river views. Until 1846 C.A. Weerts lived at 'Huize Mariënberg' in Arnhem, where he brought together an extensive collection of romantic paintings and drawings.
