The painter and graphic artist Cor Basart belongs to the first class of Amsterdam post-war abstract artists. His compositions, usually beautiful in color, consist of spontaneous forms emerging from his fantasy. There is usually also some figuration recognizable in the form of female figures or heads painted in thin lines. Parisian art, especially that of Picasso, Matisse and the artists of the post-war Ecole de Paris, was his main source of inspiration. In 1948 Basart took part with paintings in the exhibition 'Schilders van nu' in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. After that, he focused more and more on graphic work.
