Cornelis Kuijpers was part of the late flowering of the Hague School, with landscape representations that are strongly reminiscent of Willem Maris. Spurred by his teachers at the Quellinus school in Amsterdam, Kuijpers set out with his easel to work en plein air, first in Rijswijk and later in the wooded surroundings of Renkum (1898-1910). He chose a palette of silvery greys and emerald greens to render misty pastures punctuated by ditches, flowering orchards, forest creeks and tjalk barges on the waterside. Appearing alongside artists such as Théophile de Bock and Charles Dankmeijer, Kuijpers exhibited his work at the Renkum artists’ association, Pictura Veluvensis.
