Edward Portielje comes from a well-known Antwerp family of artists. He received his first painting lessons from his father; after that he was a student at the academy of the genre and history painter Charles Verlat. In our country he is best known for his detailed depictions of Dutch fisherman life. He mainly drew inspiration for this on the Zeeland coast, not far from his hometown of Antwerp.
