Painter, art philosopher and author Egon von Vietinghoff grew up in an artistic environment. His father was a pianist, his mother a writer of philosophical works and their house was a meeting place for artists. As a child, Von Vietinghoff lived in Paris, Wiesbaden and Switzerland. He then stayed in Munich and Paris, Capri and Mallorca, Argentina and Uruguay and from 1948 in Zurich-Wollishofen, Switzerland. Von Vietinghoff worked in red chalk and tempera, etched, but he depicted his subject most strongly in oil paint. He painted flowers, still lifes, landscapes, portraits and genre scenes. Fruit still lifes make up almost half of his oeuvre because they were so popular. In this, Von Vietinghoff shows himself to be a student of the old masters; they are works that stand out for their naturalness, plasticity and a virtuoso rendering of light.
