Elsa Rubbens was a painter and illustrator. She preferred representations of peasant life in Brabant and portraits, especially children's portraits. She also made book and magazine illustrations and designs for posters. Elsa Rubbens first went abroad for her education: she took classes at the Frauenakademie in Vienna. Back in the Netherlands she continued her education at the academy in Rotterdam, among others. Elsa Rubbens lived in her birthplace Waalwijk until 1934, then in Tilburg (1935-1943) and Delden (1944-1998).
