The Belgian painter Evariste de Buck was educated at the academies of Antwerp and Brussels. His early work shows a preference for symbolistic and allegorical subjects. In 1917 he settled in Sint-Martens-Latem, where his style became luministic under the influence of Emile Claus. He made another radical turn in 1930, when he switched to painting expressionistic landscapes and figures.
