The painter-sculptor Evert van Hemert is known for his plump female statues. Sturdy and round, with small faces and finished in bronze or paint, they radiate an earthy cheerfulness. The same goes for his animals, which range from tiny seal to oversized cat. In his artistry Evert van Hemert is extremely passionate and serious. His images are the result of a long process. This starts with molding in wax or clay, then casting, sanding and grinding, patination and finally the application of the details. As a result, his images become personalities, closely linked to the human being that Evert is. The artist finds inspiration for his paintings in his daily environment and in Friesland, where he settled in the village of Kolderwolde in 1997. Themes such as air, light and emptiness often return in his paintings.
