Ewoud de Kat was a gifted colourist whose style was initially closely related to the Flemish expressionists. The painter was born in Vlissingen in 1904 and received his first drawing lessons from the Flemish Gerard Jacobs. Although he subsequently moved to Rotterdam and settled in Haarlem in 1935, he continued to maintain a close relationship with his native soil. In the summer months he regularly came to Walcheren to paint the farmers on the land and the harbour of Veere. After a stay in Paris in 1948, under the influence of the French Cubists, he set out on a new path. His work is powerfully expressionistic and cubist in character and intense and bright in colour with a dramatic use of black.
