oil on canvas 41.4 x 52.3 cm, signed l.l.

This painting was previously for sale.

The romantic landscape painter Ferdinand Hendrik Sijpkens was active between 1833 and 1860. His work includes all the themes that characterize this group of painters: finely detailed forest views, ruins, panoramic landscapes with rural people and cattle, and landscapes at sunset and in the snow. The painter, born in Amsterdam, was trained by Cornelis Steffelaar (1797-1861), as were A.J. Eijmer and Wouterus Verschuur. After his training Sijpkens moved to Drenthe and Gelderland, lived in Haarlem for a year and returned to Amsterdam in 1849.
