The Belgian painter Fernand Toussaint was a student of the then well-known portrait and history painter J.F. Portaels. He painted landscapes, flower still lifes and especially portraits of women. These were appreciated by contemporaries for their elegance and informal design, in combination with sober, moody colors and a loose, impressionistic depiction of the subject.
