Floris Jespers came from a Belgian family of artists. Both father Emiel and brother Oscar were well-known sculptors. Jespers' work is characterized by a constant search and experimentation with new techniques and styles. Like many of his contemporaries, he was initially influenced by realism and impressionism. From 1920, cubism and geometric abstraction had an effect on his style, even later expressionism entered his work. Jespers' oeuvre shows a preference for landscapes, city scenes, figures and interiors. Travels to the Belgian Congo in the 1950s lead to the introduction of stylization and rhythm in his painting.
