Folkert Haanstra, brother of the cinematographer Bert Haanstra, was a self-taught painter. Only at a later age did he combine a job as a teacher in Arnhem with lessons at the academy in that city. In 1963 he was appointed teacher at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. He settled in Vries and became a member of the Drentse Schildersgenootschap. He painted landscapes and still lifes in an abstract-figurative style. As a monumental artist, he made mosaic and wall reliefs in Meppel and Zuidwolde, among others.
