Frans Koppelaar paints modern impressionist landscapes, cityscapes and portraits in the style of the Hague and Amsterdam School. He was educated at the Royal Academy in The Hague, after which he developed a figurative painting style that went against the prevailing abstract expressionism. In this he followed a general trend in contemporary Dutch art since the 1970s and 1980s, namely an increasing appreciation for tradition and figuration.
