Born in Amsterdam, Frans Langeveld studied chemistry before he fully devoted himself to painting. He followed lessons at the 'Rijksnormaalschool' in Amsterdam, then became a pupil of G.W. Dijsselhof. Initially he painted landscapes, many Amsterdam cityscapes and interiors. His work is solid, robust and somewhat rough in structure. He drew people, action, movement and the epic in nature. From 1903 on he regularly came to Laren where he settled and where he painted peasant interiors with figures. He was more realistic than his colleagues.
