Topographical cityscapes were a very popular genre in Holland in the 18th century. It was therefore not uncommon for prints by artists such as Jan de Beyer to be turned into paintings by anonymous imitators and modest masters. One of them was Fredericus Theodorus Renard, painter of landscapes and cityscapes of Amsterdam and its rural surroundings. 'The Portuguese Synagogue seen from the Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam' was painted by him after the example of a print of the Portuguese Synagogue by J. Schouten, which was part of the Atlas by Pierre Fouquet Jr. (1760-1783). It is known that Renard did not yet sign his work around 1800 and 1815.
