Geertruida Maria Buys was a rarity as a professional painter in the 19th century and was one of the seven independent paintress in The Hague in her time. In 1845 she married Cornelis Petrus 't Hoen. He was originally a merchant by trade, but according to traditions, he would not devote himself fully to his artistic career until after his marriage. Both lived and worked in The Hague for some time and then left for Brussels. The artist mainly made a name for herself with portrait miniatures painted in a romantic style, interiors with figures and church interiors.
