The work of the French painter Geneviève Claisse is considered to be part of the geometric-abstract direction in painting. She feels related to the Constructivists and to the 'nouvelle abstraction géometrique', which originated around the Galerie Denise René in Paris and to which, for example, Vasarely also belonged. In 1958 she had her first solo exhibition. Initially she worked with Auguste Herbin, whose work she would compile a catalog raisonné much later (1993), but later went her own way. The starting point for her work was the application of pure, strict forms, the rejection of perspective and great perfectionism in the elaboration. After 1964, themes emerge through a process of simplification and construction in which she tries to achieve a harmonious balance using circles and squares.
