Although he was destined to become a teacher, Ger Langeweg opted for an artistic career. He first worked as a house painter, then in Amsterdam as an advertising artist. It was not until the late 1920s that he became a free artist. He studied in Bruges and Ghent and from 1930 came under the influence of the realists Raoul Hynckes and Wim Schumacher. After that, the unreal element in his work increased. On that basis, he is regarded as one of the few Dutch representatives of surrealism.
