G.J. Staller was born in Amsterdam in 1880 and lived and worked in this city for most of his life. He received his education at the Rijksakademie in the capital, after which he mainly painted Amsterdam cityscapes and folk scenes in the Jewish neighborhood around Waterlooplein and the Jordaan. Staller was therefore called the painter of Amsterdam Jewish folk life.
