Gerard Koekkoek was first taught by his father Jan H.B .before becoming a pupil of the impressionist landscape artist H.W. Jansen and the etcher Pieter Dupont. At various times he lived and worked in Hilversum, Amsterdam, The Hague and Vlissingen, while making study trips to France and Germany. Gerard Koekkoek drew and painted but was mainly a printmaker (etchings, lithographs and woodcuts). He also restored paintings. His work is impressionistic and reveals a preference for typical water-rich Dutch landscapes: a windmill on a waterway, a fishing village on the Zuiderzee or a bustling inland harbour of a city.
