Gerard Moortgat, born in 1908, painted landscapes, figures and still lifes in a style that is somewhere between impressionism and expressionism. The Flemish painter received his training at the academies of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Schaerbeek, and finally in Leuven by Henri Logelain. In search of the effect of light, he visits Venice. A subsequent trip through Italy, in his own words, leaves a lasting mark on his work. Back in Belgium, he became fascinated by the landscape of the Ardennes and the Kemperland, but he can also be found on the Flemish coasts, in Brittany and the south of France.
