The tradition of the Dutch 17th-century flower still lifes continued into the 19th century with the work of Gerardine van de Sande Bakhuyzen. However, influenced by the Barbizon School and the French impressionists, her work no longer concentrates on the symbolism of flowers, but rather on their specific character and the mood that they create. Her work is characterised by combinations of flowers with decorative types of foliage and branches which, instead of including them in the arrangement, she seemingly leaves strewn about on the forest floor.
