Gerrit van 't Net was a painter, graphic artist and monumental artist. He was educated at the academy in Amsterdam (1932-'36) under the direction of Heinrich Campendonk. He was also taught by, among others, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, J.H. Jurres and Willem van Leusden. After completing his studies, Van 't Net spent two years in Paris, where he undoubtedly became acquainted with the latest developments in the visual arts. Van 't Net made paintings (portraits, figure studies), stained glass objects, mosaics, wall paintings and metal sculptures. His style was multiform: he worked in a figurative, abstract and surrealistic style. The nude, erotic themes and sexual symbolism are frequent in the work of this artist. Van 't Net's work was shown at the Venice Biennale in 1952. He was a member of the Realisten and the Onafhankelijken in Amsterdam, among others.
