Gijsbertus Derksen received his first drawing lessons from Herman Jansen in Arnhem and subsequently attended the academy in The Hague and Amsterdam. There his talent developed under the inspiring influence of painter director August Allebé. He encouraged his students to go their own way and taught them to paint and draw outdoors. Like so many young painters around 1900, he then traveled to Paris and Italy. He took the sunlight and the bright colours back to Holland in his work. Living in Zelhem he painted beautiful, atmospheric landscapes and figure pieces.
