Hans Hermann belonged to the group of German landscape painters, with pupils of the sea painter E.G. Dücker (1841-1916) at the Düsseldorf Academy, who after 1885 went to the Dutch coast at regular intervals to paint the fishing life in Katwijk and Scheveningen. Herrmann first came to Katwijk in 1890, following in the footsteps of German Grobe (1857-1938) who made his first visit to this picturesque fishing village in 1887. Characteristic of the coastal landscapes of these painters are the balanced colour and light values and a loose, impressionistic touch. In addition to his Dutch beach views, Hermann was also known for his richly decorated cityscapes of Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Vlissingen and Rotterdam.
