In the 19th century, when nature and animal life had not yet penetrated our living rooms through television and magazines, the work of animal painters was very popular. One of them was Hans Schmidt, who we only know was born in 1877 in Berlin. His oeuvre includes works of lions and tigers, for which he made studies in the Berlin zoo, as well as small game, farm animals and birds that he studied in nature. Animals and landscape form a beautiful unity in Schmidt's paintings. In addition, he was a skilful impressionist with a striking touch and a special feeling for depicting (sun)light and colour.
