In a dark skirt and shawl she stands out against the blond dune: the young Katwijk fisherwoman. Thus towards the end of the 19th century, her presence on the beach began to attract the attention of the Impressionists, always looking for a slice of everyday life. Blommers, Evert Pieters, Willy Sluiter painted her caring, working and helping. But rarely as colorful and intense as the German painter Hans von Bartels. Maybe because she almost pretended to be an exotic bird. Foreigners were extremely moved by the old traditions and wonderful costumes of the fishermen along our coast. By portraying her firmly, in a broad brushstroke and filling almost the entire image plane, he shows who she is: a heroine in her own way.
