Hendrik van Os, better known as Henri van Os-Delhez, was trained as a decorative painter at the Craft School and the Drawing School for Art Crafts in Amsterdam. However, because the free painting profession attracted him much more, he developed himself further and took painting lessons from the impressionist Arnold Marc Gorter. Van Os-Delhez painted a wide range of subjects: flowers, still lifes, landscapes, church interiors and cityscapes in a loose, impressionistic style. A preference for the use of earth colours is characteristic of his oeuvre. He lived and worked successively in Amsterdam, Laren and Blaricum (1928) and also worked extensively in Paris and the south of France.
