Herman Bieling trained at the Rotterdam Academy of Art and lived and worked most of his life in the district Hillegersberg. He was a fervent avant-gardist and driving force behind ‘De Branding’, a Rotterdam artists’ association, whose exhibitions and activities were of a pioneering nature. After 1917 his style evolved from luminous to a synthesis of Cubism and Expressionism. He lost most of his work when a huge fire broke out in his studio in 1930.
