Herman Heuff was a civil servant at the Ministry of Finance and also a painter of landscapes, flower still lifes, city and harbour views. With his early work he joined the Hague school. During a study trip to Italy he became fascinated by the effects of sunlight and the paintings that followed have an impressionistic style. When Heuff became blind in 1933, he started sculpting small plastics, mainly figurines of animals. Heuff was a student of the Hague Drawing Academy and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Following the example of his teacher Floris Arntzenius, he painted many intimate city scenes of a small size, in which the atmospheric mood is well affected.
