The Amsterdam impressionist Isaac Israels painted bits of ‘accidental life' that he found in the city's shopping streets, coffee houses and theatres. But also on the Dutch coast and along the Italian Riviera, where he painted airy beach scenes with elegantly dressed ladies in summery outfits. In the summer, Isaac often stayed in Scheveningen, where he rented a house with his father Jozef. There he captured two athletic amazons during their (morning) ride on the beach in quick, virtuoso brushstrokes and a sunny palette.
