J.G. Hans was born in The Hague, where he attended the Academy of Fine Art and took painting lessons from Andreas Schelfhout. In his romantic landscapes he sometimes followed his teacher so closely in his choice of motifs and composition that at times his paintings were later ‘renamed’ a Schelfhout. On his teacher’s advise he made several study trips around Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.
